I am a lifestyle newborn photographer (more on that later), and I understand the value and importance of capturing these early moments of your baby’s life!

If you’re a new parent, you’re probably overwhelmed with all the decisions you need to make. 

Newborn photography doesn’t have to be one of them. 

Let me guide you through the process and provide you with all the information you need to capture the early moments of your baby’s life.

When I had Chloe, I thought I could take my own newborn photos (had been a hobby photographer for years at this point), how wrong I was. I am SO glad that I hired someone to take photos for us because I was just too busy trying to survive! I would take photos, never edit them and they just sat on my SD card. Even now, I hire someone to take my family photos every year because it’s that important to me! 

They grow so much, and so quickly (especially in that first year), that you could almost do monthly photoshoots!). And so by the time you’re ready to hire a newborn photographer because you realize that you don’t have the time and energy – they’ve changed! Hire someone before you have your baby and let me do all the hard work for you so that you can focus on you and your family! 

Let’s dive into some of the most common questions about newborn photography.

“What should I look for when hiring a newborn photographer?”

It’s important to choose a photographer who has experience working with newborns and families. You might be a family just starting your family and this will be your first. If that’s you? Congratulations momma! You are in the sweetest spot, and even though what’s coming is hard, it’s also SO rewarding and you have no idea how much joy you’ll experience through the next five years. 

 As a photographer that specializes in families, I have years of experience working with newborns and their families. So if you’ve got a whole crew, I’m here for you. Life is a little different when you have more than one, and those individual relationships with brothers and sisters with your newborn are precious! I don’t know if there is anything sweeter than a toddler holding a newborn. It’s at that moment when you realize how “grown up” your toddler is!

“What can I expect during a newborn photography session?”

During a lifestyle newborn photography session, I’ll work to create a comfortable and safe environment for your baby, and guide you through the posing process. You can include your family members in the photos, and I encourage parents and siblings to participate in this special moment. We can do the session in your home, in a studio, or even do a morning session outdoors if you’ve got a spring/summer newborn!

To capture the best moments, it’s important to schedule your newborn photography session as early as possible, ideally within the first two weeks of your baby’s life. I recommend booking your session as soon as possible during your pregnancy to ensure availability.

I do a lifestyle newborn session which means that it’s more about the relationships between family members and your newborn. We’ll get some individual photos of your newborn, of course! But this session is for all of you as you enter into this new phase of life. We won’t do wraps and poses of baby on bean bags, so if that’s what you’re looking for, I have some other recommendations I’d love to share with you, but we focus more on the family as a whole with some sprinklings of individual newborn photos when they are okay to not be held. Lots of individuals on mom and dads bed, in their crib, etc. 

“Do I need to bring anything?”

You don’t need to bring much to the session! I do encourage you to bring a few personal items that you would like to incorporate into the photos, like a special blanket or toy (this is optional)! And if the session is in your home, I would just have those things nearby! If your home is an in home session, it does help quite a bit to just have everything at your fingertips, but it’s absolutely possibly to do your session outside or in a studio! Here’s a BTS that my five year old took for me in a clients home! 🙂

“When will I get my photos?”

After the session, you can expect to receive the final edited photos within 4 weeks typically, but up to 6-8 weeks during busy season! I spend lots of time on each individual photo editing out any blemishes (and on newborns sometimes you can get some funky skin with all those hormone changes!). I also edit out any major distractions and strive to really make each photo that I deliver a work of art and something that you could hang on a wall or put into a custom album. 

“How much does newborn photography cost?”

Newborn photography sessions can range from $700 to $3,000, depending on the collection. I know this might seem like a significant investment, but keep in mind that newborn photography is a specialized service that requires a lot of time, effort, and equipment. As a Memphis Newborn Photographer and as a mom, I’m dedicated to providing high-quality images & products that you’ll cherish for a lifetime! I’d absolutely love to serve your family and create that beautiful artwork for your home!

I offer high quality albums and prints to each of my clients because there is SO much value in having an album that you can look through regularly. I know it may seem like an album will just get destroyed if you’ve got wild toddlers, but there will come a day when things will calm down and your kids will sit on the couch together and look through their newborn photos together and ooh and ahh over how tiny and cute they were.
