In my many years as a photographer, I have taken photos in all different kinds of locations. From downtown cityscapes to wide-open farmland, I’ve learned a thing or two about why a good backdrop for your family photos is so important.

I have worked extensively in both Utah and Tennesee, and I have discovered so many favorite locations that each has something different to offer. When you work with me, you don’t ever need to stress about finding a spot. I am always happy to take care of that for you!

If I had to choose just one setting that is my favorite kind of backdrop, I would choose open fields and green trees every time. There is just something about the way natural light diffuses through the treetops that makes for a dreamy photo. Thankfully, however, there are endless options for fantastic locations that will complement your family.

I could chat all day about why locations are important. Here are a few reasons why a good backdrop makes a big difference in your photos.

Keeps your family in focus. There are so many aspects of family pictures that feel like a big deal, but at the end of the day, the most important part of your photos is YOU! Your spouse and kiddos are the focal point. The best kinds of backgrounds are ones that add to the beauty of the photo but don’t distract from your smiling faces.

Cohesive with your home decor. One of my top priorities for my clients post-session is to help them print their images out. There is something so magical about physical copies of your family photos displayed throughout your home. I always gravitate towards backdrops that will look beautiful with the decor style already in your home.

Complements card or invitation designs. Another great use for family pictures sending them out to friends and family, Whether it’s a group shot for your Christmas card or an individual photo for a graduation announcement. Before our session, we will work together to find a location that will go well with any style of card that you choose. 

Allows room for creative outfits. I know that deciding what your family should wear to photos can feel stressful, especially if you’re trying to coordinate everything around one specific location. Bright, neutral backdrops allow you a little bit more freedom when picking outfits. Like I always say, start with yourself and then add in clothes that match.

Balances the overall composition of the photo. From a photographer’s standpoint, I search for backdrops that will help your photos look balanced. This may mean a tall tree or mountain behind you, or even a wide expanse of sky. These are the kinds of elements that bring a complete look to your images, without requiring you to do anything extra.
