One of the best parts of being a senior is getting your very own portrait session. I remember looking forward to senior photos throughout all high school! For any new (or soon-to-be) 12th graders, I want to make your job easy and let you in on all the behind-the-scenes secrets that will make your session go smoothly.
The goal of senior photos is to celebrate YOU and your accomplishments throughout your high school career. This is a time for looking back through the memories of the past four years, as well as looking forward to significant changes. Life after high school can be equal parts daunting and exciting, so be sure to take this time to celebrate the phase you’re in before it all changes! Senior photos are a perfect way to memorialize who you are right now.
No matter your age, professional photos can be daunting. For some people, it’s a little overwhelming to think about all eyes being on you. If this sounds familiar, don’t worry. We’re going to be in this together! I want to make your senior photo session feel as natural and comfortable as possible, and we can start by choosing a location that is perfect for you.
First, it’s important to consider your schedule and location. We don’t want to plan something that will take too long to get to or isn’t relevant to your area. Next, take a moment and think about your interests and hobbies and how those things can be incorporated into your photos. If you’re a tennis player, we can go to the courts for a few shots, or if you want to dance in your pictures we can find a pretty cityscape backdrop.
The options are endless when it comes to locations. Wanna grab your guitar and head to an open field? Or how about a cute ice cream shop or old cinema downtown? A natural outdoor location like a trail or park is always a great option as well if you’re just looking for a cool, laid-back vibe.
Once the location is nailed down, it’s time to talk about timing. Senior photos are generally taken in outdoor settings, so natural lighting plays a big part in planning. I recommend shooting during golden hour to take advantage of when the sun will be the easiest to work with. The pretty bright lighting helps really set the mood and allows us to capture the inner beauty of being a teenager. The evening is also usually a good time for those busy senior schedules, so it’s a win-win all around!
One last important factor to consider while planning your senior session is your outfits. What you wear will be influenced by the location and lighting, so be sure to nail down those details first! Keep in mind that you will also want your clothing to reflect any hobbies you may be incorporating. Neutrals are always a good bet! First and foremost, however, choose an outfit that you feel comfortable in. It’s your day– it’s important that you feel confident in what you’re wearing.
Senior photos memorialize so many aspects of life as a teenager and soon-to-be adult. The best part about these pictures is that they can truly be as involved or laid-back as you want them to be. Whether you’re showcasing your skills or just smiling for the camera on an open backroad, you’ll end up with some beautiful photos that will last you a lifetime.
