5 Tips for Including Pets in Your Family Photos

Family, Pets

One of the things I love most about being a photographer is the opportunity to make each session unique to the client I’m working with, whether it’s a high-schooler, a couple, or a family. It’s so fun to find different ways to incorporate things that represent their interests and personalities. It’s one of the things that make your photos feel like YOU!

My favorite way to make your session feel meaningful is to include your pets, especially dogs! They can bring such a fun and lively attitude to the session. Not only are pets great for moral support, but they’re important little family members who deserve to be represented in photos too.

While there are a lot of benefits to bringing your pet along, taking photos with your pup isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. There are a few important things to consider that will help you decide if your pet is a good candidate for professional family photos.

So, let’s chat! Here are five tips for including pets in your family photos.

Consider their temperament

All dogs are so different, and every dog will react to being in a new situation differently. Pets that make the best candidates for family photos are the ones that follow commands, can sit still for a few minutes at a time, and are friendly to new people. It’s also important to think about their experience – is a photo session going to stress them out or make them nervous? You know your dog best, so make a decision that will benefit everyone.

Check with your photographer

Once you’ve established that your pet would be a happy and willing participant in family photos, be sure to check with your photographer. Not everyone will be on the same page about including furry friends in your photos, and that’s totally okay. It’s best practice to trust your photographer and respect their policies surrounding pets.

Find pet-friendly locations

If your photographer is happy to have your dog tag along, your next step is double-checking that your location is pet-friendly. There are lots of outdoor places that are great for pets, and a few that have strict rules about animals. For example, some parks require dogs to be on leash at all times. Make sure you understand exactly what the expectations are surrounding pets before you go.

Help Your Pet Get Ready

Even pets need a little bit of prep before getting their photo taken! For dogs, try practicing a few basic commands and practice poses before the day of your session to help them know what to do. Make sure they’re groomed and looking photo-ready! It’s also a good idea to take them on a walk beforehand so they can get some energy out before sitting still for a while.

Come Prepared

Being prepared with supplies for your pet is one of the best ways to ensure that your session goes smoothly. This can include things like doggy bags, toys, treats, and a leash or collar. While you definitely want lots of photos with your adorable furry friend, you might also want a few without, so consider bringing something to tie them up with while we grab those shots.

After you’ve done all the preparation, it’s time for the best part: having fun together at the session. Some of my favorite pose ideas with dogs or pets are: walking and playing together, snuggling or petting the dog, and having the dog sit on a family member’s lap. Pets are great for breaking the ice and helping everyone act naturally.

I hope these tips help you prepare for photos with your furry family member! It’s such a fun and unique way to make memories together that you will always cherish.
