Hey there sweet friend! As a Germantown Newborn Photographer, I can imagine that all the information—or even the gaps in it—about giving birth might feel a bit overwhelming. But please know, I’m here for you and ready to support you!

Here are five things about giving birth that will help you feel more prepared and in control.

(And hey, if these pique your interest, bring these up to your doctor at the next appointment!)

You can bring your own music or sounds to the delivery room.

Music can have a powerful impact on our emotions, and it can help create a calm and soothing environment for you during labor. You can bring your own playlist, a sound machine, or even your own voice to help you relax and focus during labor.

Question for your doctor: Can I bring music to the birthing room?

Birthing positions – there are many different positions that can help make the birthing process easier.

There are various birthing positions that can help make the birthing process easier, such as standing up, sitting down, on your hands and knees, or even lying down. Experiment with different positions to find what feels most comfortable for you.

Question for your doctor: In what positions are you willing to help me birth my baby?

The power of the mind – visualization and other relaxation techniques can help during labor.

Visualization and relaxation techniques such as hypnobirthing, yoga, and meditation can help you stay calm and focused during labor. It can also help to lower stress hormones and increase endorphins, which can make labor more manageable.

Question: Is there anything I can do now to learn how to cope with labor?

You will probably poop during labor (and that’s okay!).

It’s a normal and natural part of the birthing process, and your nurses and doctors are used to it. Don’t let this concern hold you back, it’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

Cesarean sections are not as scary as they seem.

I bring this up because often times, having a C-section is something that everyone is terrified of. Having a husband who is an OB/GYN has made me realize that C-sections are a common form of delivery and can be planned or unplanned. Your doctor and nurses will take great care of you and your baby during the procedure. It’s important to remember that a c-section is a surgical procedure and there are risks associated with it, but it can also save the lives of both mother and baby in certain situations.

Question: In what circumstances do you perform c-sections?

A new young family poses with their twin girls in their own home after having a C-section. Germantown Newborn Photographer, Kailee Matsumura captures this moment.

So, there you have it! You’re armed with some new information that will hopefully help you feel more confident and excited about your birth!

Through the years of being a Germantown Newborn Photographer (and also having my own baby, because lets be real, that gives you the most experience;)), and being a nurse, I’ve had clients tell me about their birthing experiences and everyone is different, and for some women, their birth is a typical birth. For others, their birth may be more high risk.

My hope is that you will have the easiest birth, you’ll get to make lots of choices, and then you’ll have your sweet babe. But also remember that no matter how your birthing experience goes, the newborn experience is coming, and I hope during the newborn phase, you can heal, and snuggle, and love on that little baby at your own leisure. Someday you’ll get into the routine, you’ll get to know your baby better than anyone else. After all, they are yours! You made them!

While you’re getting everything prepared for your newborn, here’s a blog post with all of my favorite Newborn things! It has the things I absolutely couldn’t live without, and all of the things that I just didn’t feel like quite lived up to the hype. I hope this helps you find those things to make those first few weeks run smoothly!
